To a query on treatment cost, duration of treatment and insurance coverage, Dr Amin said, “The cost of treatment is in the range of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh depends upon the needs of the couple. The duration of the IVF treatment is one month to three months. It is neither covered under any insurance scheme nor any healthcare schemes of the government.”

Throwing light on the advantages of having one’s own gametes, Dr Amin said, “The egg can be fertilized from your own body or a donor’s body. In cases, when a woman is unable to produce healthy eggs, donor eggs are fertilized with her partner’s sperm. The problem, however, lies in the genetic makeup. The donor eggs are screened for genetic abnormalities before starting the process. The child, however, is not genetically similar to the mother.
